AAKP Leadership Speaks at Rogosin Institute Symposium on Integrated Kidney Care

Paul T. Conway and Richard Knight Offer Policy Views in Support New Care Model

New York, NY – On October 19, 2016, the leadership of the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) participated in the Rogosin Institute’s Symposium “Integrative Kidney Care: Is it Achievable?” cosponsored by New York-Presbyterian Regional Hospital Network and New York-Presbyterian/Queens at The Rockefeller University. AAKP President Paul T. Conway and AAKP Vice President and Chair of Public Policy Richard Knight joined fellow symposium participants including the Rogosin Institute, Mayo Clinic, New York-Presbyterian, American Society of Nephrology, Wellness Institute and Northwest Kidney Centers’ Nutrition and Fitness Services.

“The Rogosin Institute, under the leadership of President Dr. Barry Smith, has been a pioneer in patient engagement and patient-centered care for kidney patients for decades, and it is no surprise to AAKP that Rogosin would undertake a high-impact symposium on how best to model the future of integrative kidney care,” stated AAKP President and Symposium Presenter Paul T. Conway. “Kidney disease poses high-risks and heavy burdens to those who suffer its impacts, so early intervention and coordinated disease management by the patient and a full team of medical experts is the best means for improving patient outcomes.”

Conway was the featured speaker for the session “What is Needed to Achieve Integrated Kidney Care? A Patient and Policy Perspective.” He highlighted his own efforts to manage kidney disease for the past thirty-six years and the challenges many patients face as they attempt to coordinate their care across multiple medical specialties. Conway, from the perspective of his policy experiences serving under three presidents and two governors, also outlined the key principles necessary to guide major changes in health care delivery such as a new model for integrated kidney care.

AAKP Vice President Richard Knight offered his perspectives as both a former senior Congressional staffer on Capitol Hill as well as his experiences as a former hemodialysis patient and ten-year transplant recipient. Knight said, “It was an honor to participate in the Symposium. AAKP is firmly committed to the efforts of Dr. Barry Smith, the Rogosin Institute and their partners at the New York Presbyterian Hospital to inform policy-makers on proven, cost-saving methods to increase health outcomes without sacrificing quality,”

The session was attended by leading nephrologists, primary care physicians, nurses, social workers, policy experts and academics involved in comprehensive kidney care.

Conway’s full presentation is available through the Rogosin Institute’s ITunes University site and accessible via a direct link from the Rogosin Institute’s homepage www.rogosin.org.

Founded in 1969, AAKP is the largest and oldest independent kidney patient organization in America. Governed by a patient-majority Board of Directors, AAKP conducts national education programs designed to better inform kidney patients, care-givers and policy-makers about the true impacts of kidney disease, prevention efforts and treatment methods. AAKP publishes RenalLife Magazine which has a circulation of over 20,000 and appears in over 5,000 dialysis centers. The organization executes a national advocacy strategy in conjunction with allied kidney organizations designed to insert the patient voice into proposed policies, research efforts and care deliberations before the Executive Branch and the U.S. Congress.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
